Pelosi on Trump insults: "I"m done with him"

@ CNN June 11, 2019

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi told CNN"s Manu Raju on Tuesday that she"s "done" with President Donald Trump but would not say whether she told Democrats behind closed doors that she"d rather see Trump "in prison."

"I"m done with him," Pelosi told Raju at the Fiscal Summit from the Peter G. Peterson Foundation.

"I don"t even want to talk about him," she said, adding, "My stock goes up every time he attacks me, so what can I say, but let"s not spend too much time on that because that"s his victory, the diverter-in-chief, the diverter-of-attention-in-chief."

Tensions between Pelosi and Trump have escalated in the past week after Pelosi reportedly told Democratic leaders in private that she wants to see the President "in prison." When asked about whether she made the remarks, Pelosi said she would keep what she told fellow Democrats behind closed doors private.

Apple supplier says iPhone will not be affected by US-China tariff war

@ The guardian June 11, 2019

Apple’s iPhone could escape Donald Trump’s escalating trade war with China.

Foxconn, one of Apple’s largest suppliers, has moved to reassure consumers and investors that prices and supplies of the Apple’s iPhone will not be affected by the ongoing US-China tariff war.

According to a senior executive at Hon Hai, also known as Foxconn, the company has more than enough capacity to make all iPhones bound for the US outside of China if necessary.

“Twenty-five percent of our production capacity is outside of China and we can help Apple respond to its needs in the US market,” said Young Liu, Hon Hai’s semiconductor division chief, at an investor briefing in Taipei.

At the briefing – which was first reported by Bloomberg – Liu said the company was investing in India, where several older iPhone models are already made at a plant in Bangalore.

“We have enough capacity to meet Apple’s demand,” Liu added.

Infowars to pay Pepe the Frog creator $15,000 to settle copyright dispute

@ CNN June 11,2019

Right-wing conspiracy theory website Infowars has agreed to pay $15,000 to the creator of the Pepe the Frog cartoon to settle a copyright suit.

Infowars, the media company headed up by broadcaster Alex Jones, used an image of Pepe the Frog in a poster sold on its website during the 2016 US presidential campaign.

Matt Furie, the creator of Pepe the Frog, sued Infowars for copyright violation in March 2018. His cartoon character started life as an innocent figure, but was later appropriated as an unofficial mascot of the alt-right.

"Happy to announce the folks suing Infowars over Pepe the Frog have agreed to settle, and accept a licensing fee of $15,000," Robert Barnes, a lawyer for Infowars, said in a statement.

Russian police detain more than 500 at protest over journalist

@ Reuters June 12,2019

Russian police detained more than 500 people, including opposition politician Alexei Navalny, at a protest in Moscow on Wednesday calling for punishment for police officers involved in the alleged framing of a journalist. Police abruptly dropped drug charges a day earlier against investigative journalist Ivan Golunov, a rare U-turn by the authorities in the face of anger from his supporters who said he was targeted over his reporting.

Golunov, 36, known for exposing corruption among Moscow city officials, was detained by police last Thursday and accused of dealing drugs, an allegation he denied.

The crude way supporters said Golunov was set up and detained triggered an unusual show of media unity and an uncharacteristically swift reversal from authorities nervous about social unrest at a time when President Vladimir Putin already faces disquiet over living standards.

The authorities had hoped freeing Golunov and promising punishment for those who allegedly framed him would appease his supporters, but they decided to go ahead with a protest on Wednesday, a public holiday in Russia, regardless.

Reuters witnesses said well over 1,000 people marched through central Moscow, chanting “Russia will be free”, “Russia without Putin” and “Down with the Tsar” as police warned them not to break the law and blocked access to certain streets.

With flowers and personal stories, Japan sexual abuse survivors seek reform

@ Reuters June 12,2019

Sexual abuse victims and their supporters rallied in nine cities around Japan this week to protest against recent court acquittals of alleged rapists and urge reform of the nation’s anti-rape law.

Holding flowers and placards with slogans such as “#MeToo, #WithYou”, sexual abuse survivors on Tuesday evening recounted their experiences to show the need to scrap a measure they say puts too high a burden on rape victims, discouraging them from coming forward and hurting their legal chances if they do.

Legislators revised Japan’s century-old rape law in 2017 to include harsher penalties, among other changes.

The reforms, however, left intact controversial requirements for prosecutors to prove that violence or intimidation was involved or that the victim was “incapable of resistance”. Recent acquittals has revived outrage over that legal standard, which means that not fighting back can make it impossible for prosecutors to prove rape.

The #MeToo movement has been mostly subdued in Japan, where only a few sexual assault victims report the crime to the police; a majority tell no one at all for fear of being blamed themselves and publicly shamed.

Human staff will always be needed, Amazon insists

@ BBC June 11,2019

Amazon’s warehouses will always need human staff, the firm’s chief robotics technologist has told the BBC.

The company said it had deployed more than 200,000 warehouse robots working in around 50 of its locations. But despite Amazon investing heavily in advanced robotics, Tye Brady said the firm’s centres would never reach the point where they could be fully automated.

“The challenge that we have in front of us is how do we smartly design our machines to extend human capability.” Mr. Brady was speaking to the BBC at Re:Mars, an Amazon event intended to showcase the firm’s latest work in machine learning, automation, robotics and space. He told the BBC the suggestion that robotics and AI would replace humans was a “myth”. “You extend human capability. And when you gain productivity, then you have the ability to create new jobs that were unimaginable five years ago.”

One of the company’s announcements was Pegasus, a new robot that is being used in the firm’s “sortation centres” - the last step before a package is handed off to a delivery company. An accompanying video showed humans placing packages on to the robot, which then carried it, autonomously, to another location ready to be taken out for delivery.

The system is able to work out the quickest route for the robots to take, taking into account the hundreds of other robots moving around at the same time. A “flow control specialist” monitors the movements of up to 800 Pegasus robots at once.

But one task robots still struggle greatly with is picking up individual objects of varying shapes and standards - which is still a key job of the human worker, particularly in the areas of Amazon’s business that deal with food handling.

“It"s not humans versus machines at all,” Mr. Brady told the BBC. “It"s humans and machines working together to achieve a task.”

Plus-size Nike mannequins: recognition of reality or obesity promoters? Critics stir up debate on social media

@ South China Morning Post June 12, 2019

Nike revealed plus-sized and para-sport mannequins in its London store recently, an inclusive move that was widely celebrated for embracing the reality that people come in different shapes and sizes, but also criticised by some.

Writing for British news outlet The Telegraph, journalist Tanya Gold claiming the sportswear brand was promoting obesity – attracting ire for her “fatphobic” take on Nike’s new mannequins.

“I fear that the war on obesity is lost, or has even, as is fashionable, ceased to exist,” Gold wrote. “Yet the new Nike mannequin is not size 12, which is healthy, or even 16 – a hefty weight, yes, but not one to kill a woman. She is immense, gargantuan, vast. She heaves with fat,” Gold wrote. She also insinuated that plus-sized people could not possibly be exercising: “She is not readying herself for a run in her shiny Nike gear. She cannot run. She is, more likely, pre-diabetic and on her way to a hip replacement.”

Twitter users swiftly called out Gold and other critics for their hypocrisy in shaming fat people yet not wanting them to have access to clothing for workouts. Plus-sized athletes shared their stories too. “Fat athletes exist, we are strongwomen, powerlifters, wrestlers and runners. Fat athletes exist, I know this because I am one and I’m in great company,” wrote one Twitter user.

Uber takes its flying taxi ambitions to Australia

Uber

@ BBC June 12,2019

Uber has said Australia will become the first international market for its flying taxi service Uber Air.

The firm has selected Melbourne as the third pilot city for its air taxi programme, joining Dallas and Los Angeles. Test flights are due to start from 2020, with the aim of launching commercial operations from 2023. Several companies are developing flying taxis as a future mode of transportation. Uber said increased air mobility would help ease traffic congestion in cities.

"As major cities grow, the heavy reliance on private car ownership will not be sustainable," said Eric Allison, global head of the firm"s aviation division Uber Elevate. "Uber Air holds enormous potential to help reduce road congestion." He said the 19 kilometre journey from Melbourne"s central business district to the airport would take some 10 minutes with Uber Air, down from up to an hour by car.

Uber is working with Nasa and the US Army on its flying taxis and has two aircraft manufacturers - Embraer and Pipistrel Aircraft - also on board. Last year, the company said it would open a laboratory in Paris to develop flying taxis.

It comes at a testing time for Uber following a disappointing stock market debut last month. Uber"s first earnings report showed the US firm posted a $1bn (£790m) loss, as it faced strong competition in its ride-hailing business, and incurred extra costs related to its Uber Eats delivery service.
